…{actual} conversations… (Confessions)

Following is a snippet of a conversation between dudeguy and I regarding an article I read this weekend.  The idea of minimalism and paring down possessions is a fascinating and motivating topic for me and everytime I read a piece on the subject and share the info with my consort, the response is usually an eye-roll + heavy sign, a “you’re cleaning out your closet again, arent you?” or something to that effect.

“Babe, I was reading an article online about a couple that went from living in a two-bedroom apartment with two cars to a shoebox apartment, no cars, and they managed to clear $30,000 in debt!  In three years!”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.  This woman managed to get all of her posessions down to 100 thi…”

“She has too much stuff.”

“But she only has 100 things…clothes included…”

“TOO MUCH!  Half a sandwich and three sheets of toilet paper are all you need.”

“…”

“And if your belly is full, you don’t really need that half a sandwich.”

“But what about the next day?”

“Well, you’re gonna have to find another three sheets of toilet paper.”

I’m still not sure how serious he was when he said this.  Given his love for Woody Guthrie and the hobo-life, I’m not really sure I want to know.

    LOLOLOL dudeguy sounds so funny!

100 [personal, non-household] things is totally a goal for me but sometimes I think minimalism can be taken to an unhappy extreme. people have to go gradually after all.

I’ve been meaning to sell my clothes but I think instead I’m probably going to be donating most to goodwill now. partly out of laziness but partly because I think that’d just be better.

Oh yeah, I’m more apt to just take a couple of bags to goodwill than sell stuff. Pure laziness on my part.

Wow, this is a depressing conversation to read. Does that make me an asshole? Ok, don’t answer that please.

LOLz – I really didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so depressing might be appropriate here.

    .AHAHAHAHa i. JUST CANT!!

    100 things tho?????
ummmm that will be impossible for me…i am a natural born hoarder. i find that no matter how much i pair down, shit never quite goes down completely. but then again, the way i see it, the only reason for ‘paring down’ is to eventually ‘pair up’, some more shoes, some more clothes, some more shit . Boys just don’t understand.

I’d do the same thing and I think that’s why I haven’t really downsized. LOL.

This is funny! I feel you on the minimalism. I think I have the opposite problem though. The hubby isn’t as keen on pairing down his lifestyle as I am. I’m going to start secretly getting rid of some of the junk we’ve accumulated over the years.

    Alicia Reply:

He won’t miss it. Just do it little by little and I swear he won’t notice. LOL.

A lot of lip-biting/willful ignorance. Or compromise. I think they call it compromise.

I am so down with minimalism. When Asael and I move again, I’ll have you over and you can see it in action!

Ha! This is a favorite pipe-dream topic in my house, too. Every time I tell my man we gotta clean the house, he starts talking about how I have too much stuff and I need to get rid of it and he wants us to live on a sailboat.

I say, “So what is all this stuff I should throw away?” And we scan the room… nothing but HIS CRAP as far as the eye can see…

He returns to sweeping the floor…

Anyway I’m afraid to buy anything because of the raging bedbug epidemic.

wish wish wish the Mr. would be willing to even consider this conversation

this is a man who considers cable, internet, netflix, napster, xbox subscription as completely different discrete commodities that are ALL absolutely basic necessities for life.
