…the story of cosmetics… (Because I Love You, Confessions)
Via The Story of Cosmetics. More videos about more stuff are on The Story of Stuff website.
This and Food, Inc. have me on the cusp of an entire shift in what I buy to put in and on my body. I’m all for going green and carbon footprint reduction in terms of slowing environmental wreckage, but this, THIS provides an entirely different motive. Learning that the ingreedients in products and food (produced by SELF-POLICING industries) could be responsible for the rising incidences in cancer, illnesses, and disorders has BLOWN my mind…and scared the shit out of me.
Thoughts?
UPDATE: Here are some links provided by Lady World for your consideration. Let’s be proactive (from our desks) people!!!
- Search products and their toxicity levels at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetic’s Skin Deep Database.
- Sign the petition for the FDA to ban lead in cosmetics.
- Read about the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010.
Thank you, Lady World!

I have a book that explains all the different ingredients that is being used in food these days. You almost have to grow your own food, but I have to admit that sometimes I forget about it, and eat it anyway when I know it’s bad for me.

So do I! And I feel badly because I know better…it’s hard breaking old habits, but we have to.
It’s pretty bad, we are all in danger.

GAH. All these chemicals. Can’t I protect my skin from the sun without leaking carcinogens into my body regardless? RAWR.

Use shea butter. It has sunblocking properties. =D
I’m Vegan.
And have to watch out for most of these chemicals.
I refuse to use products tested on Animals.
And prefer to use as natural as I can.
I’ve been toying with the idea of MAKING my own skincare // makeup // health care products.
It’s a long hard road to take to switch over.
But in the end it’s worth it.
If you need any information on anything just drop me a comment.

Will DEFINITELY do.
I’ve seen tons of DIY skin and hair products. I’ll email you. =D
Do you use Lush products at all? I only ask because I know they have a lot of Vegan friendly stuff there.

hey I use Lush, it’s pricey but worth it. the problem is that you have to use it RIGHT away. I store every single product in the fridge and slice the soaps thin enough to use and store the rest of it away before it melts.

THIS is exactly why i went to the health food store yesterday and dropped a sh*t ton of cash on essential oils, raw honey, and chlorophyll. because i need to know what’s going in and on my body. and it doesn’t get any more basic than ESSENTIAL.

you should grow your hair out a little bit…just a thought.

You have totally read the labels. Especially on skin products, my friend told me to stop using ‘Apricot’ scrub. It was bad because of the beads wear out your skin in the long run.
And you have to watch out for vegetables and fruit in the grocery stores with all of those pesticides. I just opt for local markets.

I love farmers markets. Always a good source.
And apricot scrub is so bad for your face! Especially for everyone who isn’t a teenager. It’s way too rough.
Yep. That’s some scary shit. That was part of the motivation for making my own soap-just unpronounceable, unhealthy, and unethical ingredients. Now, if I could only stop eating red meat….

Miss J does what she can with regard to eating organically, she mostly does. As for the air, soil and water around her, there’s only so much she can control. Hell, she wonders sometimes if the water she waters her organic garden with isn’t LOADED with poison…

Baby shampoo though! This ish is crazy. It really boils down to money. I’ve stopped using sulfate laden shampoos and am certainly going keep tabs on the products I buy.

For skin care, I try to use as many products from Lush as I can. Soap, moisturizer, spot treatment, etc. As far as I’m concerned, nothing that’s laden with as many chemicals as what you find in a normal drugstore soap is not coming within 15ft of my face. (small exaggeration.)
The thing I really wonder about though are pools. As a swimmer, I spend anywhere from 2-4 hours in a pool almost every day. Sometimes I seriously wonder what all that chlorine will do to my system in the long run.

Ooh…I wonder about that too. I think if you wash it off right after, it’s fine…then again, who really knows?
I love Lush! I need to check out more of their products. Everything I’ve used so far works really well.
what a fantastic video, everyone should watch this, thanks for sharing this!!! xoxo

Food Inc. is sooooooooo good! I think they should show it to kids in school. Have you read The Omnivore’s Dilemma? I think you’d like it.

Never. I need to watch that.
Wow. another scary thing. Thanks for sharing. And Food Inc, also scared the bejesus out of me.

I didn’t eat any meat for two weeks. I was terrified.
I’ll eat anything, including those individually wrapped “cheese” slices. I do use a healthy face soap, though. HA!

You know, when I was younger, I wasted a whole package of single slices…apparently, I’m OCD about unrwapping cheese and would only eat one if it came out of the plastic perfectly. Any ripped cheese was thrown in the trash. Yeah, mom wasn’t too happy about that. LOL.

My gramma used to always keep it at her house for me. Along with Ritz crackers, sliced pickles, & Sprite. I never got that stuff at home, so she always hooked me up. That’s what gram’s are for!

So funny – I put this up on Wednesday, too!
You should provide links for what people can do about this now… Like the Campaign for Safe Cosmetic’s Skin Deep Database (http://www.safecosmetics.org/article.php?id=308) where you can search for products you currently own to view their toxicity.
Another thing we can do is to sign this petition for the FDA to ban lead in our cosmetics…http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/536/490/732?z00m=19851564
A bill was introduced to Congress on Wednesday called the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 (http://safecosmetics.org/section.php?id=74)
I’m glad you posted this

I have a book on DIY products and have entertained the idea, but haven’t gone around to it.

My neutrogena shampoo causes cancer?!?! This. fucking. blows. Especially if you go to the website of “safe cosmetics” and peruse the acceptable all natural stuff. None of it is brands I have even heard of or seen!
