…outfit post: superthrift… (Confessions, moment of vanity)

I was flooding when this picture was taken so there isn’t a full length shot.   Some pants were made for wearing with flats…and I should probably stop buying things marked “petite.”

All of the clothes came from Hoodweezy:  Diane Von Furstenberg top, the blazer I always wear, Ralph Lauren pants.  Self-designed necklace.  Unseen are Steve Madden Melrow shoes…which did not come from Hoodweezy

0016

I won’t lie.  I was kind of geeked when I realized that the whole outfit, sans shoes and necklace, came from the Goodwill (or Hoodwill, or Hoodweezy depending on where the store is located).  Although I’m normally a supporter of “getting your consumption on” at your local charity shop, I’m getting a but jaded with the whole experience.  It’s too damn crowded and whomever they put in charge of pricing has lost it; I got this DVF top for $2 in the same location where H&M shirts were being marked up to $10.  Seriously.  That isn’t a joke.  I went back this weekend in hopes of finding a couple of shirts that are appropriate for summer and found nothing.  NOTHING.  There were used Ikea shelves priced higher than they cost brand new and plenty of $30 dresses, though.   o_O

Lately, this is becoming more of the rule than the exception and I’m not quite sure how to handle it.  Going to Hoodwill used to be about the hunt; about finding great things among the racks at prices you’d want to brag about.  Now, it’s become more like shopping at a terribly merch’ed consignment store that doesn’t pay back the original owners.  Whack.

I could go to Buffalo Exchange…but I don’t really like Buffalo Exchange…

Where do I go nooooooooooooooooooow?

——-

In other news, all I’ve been wanting to do is make necklaces.  The one here is still being tweaked, but I was way too excited about wearing it after working past midnight to put it all together.  I’ll post better pictures when it’s finished.

This is exactly how I feel about thrift stores right now, Im not even bothering to go cause first I have to deal with crazies and thousands of kids yelling and running around the store to not even find anything or to find everything over priced. They are really taking advantage of people during this recession.

Anyway, your whole outfit is fab! Cant wait to see a close up of your necklace, it looks awesome

find other consignment/vintage stores! being in LA I’m sure you can find a few :D there’s one I found in SD that has everything priced around $5, and the goods are goood, too. I sold a bunch of stuff there too, and they’re not usually as picky or pretentious as Buffalo Exchange. D:

exactly why i stopped shopping at thrift stores. and marshall’s. and h&m. not quite the same, but yeah, the pricing is retarded and i hate the crowds and the non-quality merchandise.
and why i seem to only be buying on ebay these days. i wanna see the shooooooooes. stop holdin’ out!

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. Goodwill seems to be the worst about overpricing crappy merchandise, but other thrift stores are doing it, too. The thrill of the hunt is getting totally lost. You must have some non-Goodwill thrift stores down there, like Salvation Army or Out of the Closet, right? They’re usually better.

    Alicia Reply:

Yeah. Such a shame. They’re capitalizing on people looking for a deal. Sucks.

OotC is okkkkkkk, I need to find a new one to plow through. If Salvation Army weren’t so far, I’d probably be in there more. Thanks for the reminder. =D

I am loving this entire outfit! Plus, a DVF top for $2??? That is a great deal!

I’ve only been to my local Goodwill once and I’ve never really found anything of interest at all. Or if I liked it, I just couldn’t justify the price. I think I’m just unlucky when it comes to buying thrift/vintage sometimes…

I am not in California as I reside in Baltimore (6 years out of CA). Yes, we have the infamous “Goodwill”, the moderately expensive “Zone”, and very expensive “Cult, Doll House, and Killer Trash”. But, some times they have plain out GIVEAWAYS in really bad areas of Baltimore, dirt cheap neighbor hood shops known as village thrift’s that sell clothes for pennies on the dollar where weekends are half off already .90- 6.00 items.

Have you ever thought that MANY (maybe others haven’t considered) Released exquisite treasures because they perhaps don’t have the time to resell, or have means to have a caring heart?
    — I have been thrifting myself these past days— in the process to getting them taken in<3

    Just wanted to rant that.
Point is, 'hood' peeps get that gud gud. It's worth the ride sometimes. When I go, I consider it as an adventure literally.

You’re right. A lot of the best Hoodwill finds (in my experience) come from former “old money” areas that have…umm…done the opposite of gentrified.

    Always an adventure. =D

    >=/ grrr, that’s why I like shopping at thrift stores in the middle of nowheresville because they don’t know wtf is in there that’s worth anything. Chicago has THE best thrift stores – I guess you have to go to Chicago… haha.

I’ve actually never been to a Goodwill, I have no idea why. I go to the other thrift shops, the shadier the better. My friends and I always go to the ones in Mexican neighborhoods cause the clothes have so much bright color!
When I get back to Cali, I want to buy one of your necklaces!! I keep oogling your wonderful store but I’d rather wait until I get back, I don’t want anything to get lost in the mail.

Hey lady! It was so great to finally meet you (though I felt like I’ve known you for awhile now!)! I love this look- and you made the necklace?! How fabulous! Yeah I haven’t gone to a Goodwill recently (the last time I was in one I ran in with my ex for his Halloween costume) as it was closing. I need to go to one of the sell back stores for my own clothes or do that garage sale I mentioned :) xo, mel

I ALWAYS haggle. Except for at the mall.

Ok, I came back to tell you that I think this blog post caused me to have a terrible nightmare last night! I dreamt that the Salvation Army had decided to discontinue selling used clothing & junk. They replaced their merchandise with discards from Target, causing the store to look like a ramshackle SavOn. Horrible! I DID manage to find an awesome emerald green feather chubby though. Target brand. $5.49. Now I really want this jacket.

Have you tried Wasteland? It’s not quite $2 DVF cheap, but their pieces are reasonable and I’ve found some amaaaaaazing steals there too. Lots of Marc Jacobs, DVF, etc. I love the one of 4th street in Santa Monica. If you’re ever here, holla atcha girl, I work right up the street! :)

The Goodwill off of La Tijera/Centinela in LA actually has a lot of nice stuff in it. It’s probably the best Goodwill I’ve been too. The one in Santa Monica is really neat too! You still search through some shoddy things, but I was pretty happy when I first visited it :)
