If you’re following me on the Twitter and have been paying attention for the last day or so, you’ve probably noticed that I have a problem with a certain video by a certain wife of Jay-Z featuring Lady Gaga.  After having a discussion about said video tonight, I’ve decided to do a formal post about why the video for Video Phone is going to be the death of America and the destruction of innocence.

Actually, it probably won’t lead to either of those things, but this video is generally irresponsible as hell.

Beyonce – Video Phone (Official Music Video)

Aside from the imagery that is basically Guantanamo Bay/Abu Gharib in technicolor…you know what, fuck an
“aside.”  I want to know who greenlit the use of half naked men in hoods with guns pointed at their heads?  Anyone?

Hype?

Bey?

Mama Tina?

Beuller?

I’d love to think that this was some sort of commentary on the war and torture, but the facts that (a) it’s Beyonce and (b) every cute and attractive shade of neon is used in the scene lead me to believe that this was just an extreme lack of situational awareness (read: BAD FUCKING JUDGEMENT).

I couldn’t get a picture of one of our boys pointing a gun, but I’m prettyfreakinsure that’s happened…

Now I don’t want to make this a commentary on the war (it’s BULLSHIT), torture (the excuses I’ve heard sound a lot like those used during the Nuremberg trials), and other political type shit, so I’ll move on…to the point I was going to make after that first “aside.”

*deep breath*

I’m generally having a problem with Bey’s new direction in styling for her videos.  It seems to me that she gets progressively nekkid-er and dances increasingly more stripper-y with each new release.  I’m all for celebrating your curves, but I’ve seen Bey’s crotch more than I’ve seen my own.  Her waxer does an AMAZING job.  Of course, I didn’t need to know that info, but after watching Put a Ring on It, Diva, Ego, Sweet Dreams, and now Video Phone, I can’t help but wonder who her esthetician is.

Now, if I may put on my Helen Lovejoy hat and get to the meat of this post:

WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Let’s be real, kids.  A HUGE portion of the viewers of these videos are under the age of consent.  A lot of them aren’t even in junior high.  I would like to think that informs some of her decisions on how her videos should be, but I don’t think that’s happening.  Now, before you get all “what about the parents?” on me, consider the following:

Parents can’t control what their children are exposed to all of the time.

Scenario #1: Back when I was in 4th grade, my best friend was having a sleepover for her birthday.  After enough giggling, fawning over Jodeci videos, and miscellaneous stuff, we watched the movie Kids.   Ironically, that movie should NEVER be watched by kids.  EVER.  Sure, her parents were in the house, but they didn’t know she’d nicked the movie for us to see.

Scenario #2: When I turned 11, I had a sleepover and my friend introduced me to the half-fuzzed out Spice channel.  If you’re unfamiliar, it’s exactly what you think it is.  WHAT?  I was curious!

But where were my parents?

They were everywhere else save for those two particular (and very extreme) incidents.  My parents, especially my father, were extremely strict.  I couldn’t own CDs with the parental advisory label, I couldn’t listen to certain radio stations (I have a vast knowledge of 50s, 60s, and 70s music as a result), TV time was limited to Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite.  For all of their effort, I should have been a squeaky clean kid.

Umm, not so much.

Sure, I bore the status of valedictorian on a few occasions, but I managed to get into my fair share of shit.  And this was when television was the main way to get into less than savory stuff.  Today, the list of things that parents are supposed to be policing has grown TREMENDOUSLY.  I’d really like to hear from any parents out there on if and how they effectively keep their kids away from these kinds of images when they are coming via the television, the computer, the ipod, the cell phone, and whatever else their friends may possess that can also access said images.  I’m willing to wager that it’s impossible to do without becoming a Neo-Luddite.

I’m pretty sure you all can think of a time you got into something or had something that you knew your parents would knock you into next week for having.  Don’t worry.  I’ll wait.

Now that your memory is jogged, I’ll move on.

As children, the majority of behaviors we learned become so by first mimicking things we saw followed by positive or negative reinforcement.  I won’t bore you with details, but if you do something and get a laugh, clap or positive attention, you’re likely to keep doing it.  My gripe is that little girls who admire Bey will probably be moved to mimic this gun grinding, half-naked gyrating and look for some sort of reinforcement.  Some of that will come from parents:

(ok, I KNOW this is a little boy, but peep how even a diaper, he’s trying his damnedest to keep up)

(now this IS adorable, but Put a Ring On It is pretty mild…)

But what about the ones who don’t get that reinforcement from their parents?  Who, instead look to their friends for reinforcement?  Those who think walking around with tits, tummies and thighs out and grinding on poles in front of little boys is the thing to do?  WHAT ABOUT THEM?!?

I’ll tell you what happens.  They grow up and become productive citizens…who might earn a little extra cash by stripping on the side.  Remember, if you are positively rewarded after doing some hoe shit, you’re probably going to go out and do more hoe shit.  It’s psychology.  Get into it.

Ronnie says, You got you use what you got to get what you want!

Ronnie says, "You got to you use what you got to get what you want!"

I’m not blaming Beyonce for hypersexualized children running around dry humping each other.  I am calling her irresponsible as hell for KNOWING that she is adored by young girls around the globe and putting out Video Phone to placate their desire to see more of her.

Or maybe I’m just hypersensitive because I read stuff like this and fear for my future progeny.  Who knows?

On the UPSIDE, because I don’t just rant and actually kinda like the song, Video Phone did inspire this masterpiece:

I just can’t hate on this.  Y’all know I love trannymen.  Remind me to tell you the story about how I used to be a backup dancer for a drag queen in my heyday.

Bey,

You’re a great performer.  Definitely one of the best to do it in this generation.  I love you to pieces, but you need to put on some damn pants every now and again.  And I think the floor is clean enough from you dropping down low and sweeping the floor with it.

Love,
Alicia

I’m a Beyonce fan, but honestly, i’m getting tired of her. She already announced that she’s releasing another album next year and it’s like take a break! Give us a chance to miss you. What bothers me is the fact that her videos are incredibly boring now and it’s just her and two of her dancers in bodysuits doing choreography. Her videos from from DIL and B Day were more inspired.

That being said, b/c i’m not feeling the Lady Gaga collabo and just not really getting in to the hype, i’ve only watched the Videophone video once so I never even thought about the imagery in it. Of course most people only want to talk about her hair and clothing and i’m sure they haven’t paid attention to the men in hoods. I doubt it was on purpose, but if it was….Beyonce has some ‘splaining to do!

I definitely agreed with you when you said that the Video Phone vid was “irresponsible as hell”, and for so many reasons. I’m not generally a Beyonce fan (Destinys Child, yes), but I was actually kind of…disturbed by the Video Phone video. I guess on the superficial side, you could say it was “cute”, although I didn’t think there was anything original to the video. However, it was just so hyper sexual and the objectification by the men with the video phones was just so over the top to me. And yes, I think it was definitely trying to hard to be edgy and sexy. What I don’t understand is, if you are a DC fan, you might remember the song they did called “Nasty Girl”, with lyrics were, “Nasty put some clothes on”? Then again, I guess this is all “Sasha Fierce” and not Beyonce, so it helps her sleep better at night.

Now I feel like the old woman who talks about the good music back in my day…

also, she shouldn’t have subjected us to gaga’s face *too far?* eh…

thirdly, wow..i didn’t even get the reference to the hooded men…i wasn’t even thinking…good catch man! it IS responsible. that’s crazy. i doubt bey thinks about it…honestly. it’s like…ok, this is going to make me more famous. this is going to make me more money. ok.

The Guantanamo bay images where quite disturbing. I had not made that connection when I saw the video. Thanks for pointing that out.

When I saw the video, one of my friends asked me what I thought about it, and here is part of the email that i sent to her…

Mixed feelings there. I LOVE the ‘look’(gloss?) – i think my love for Hype Williams has to do with it. But i kinda felt like they just threw too many things in with no proper direction / ‘storyline’ – like the guns and all that, not sure how they fit in and if they were necessary. I thought the guys with the cameras on their heads was excellent – and they could have played on that a little more. I also don’t like the way that the message is for guys to take videos of women/girls and not the other way round (especially since there has been a significant rise in sexting in high schools in america) they
could have redone the vocals for the video… And this was a chance for BeyBey to surprise people and be cheeky (cheeky – I’m sounding british
more and more lately. lol.). Lady Gaga could have been revealed as one of the guys with the cameras on their heads / Beyonce could have been using her videophone to film LG or vice versa etc

Thought Lady Gaga would have been featured more – even in parts where she wasn’t present vocally. Felt like it was a typical Bey Bey move – outshine anyone next to you ALWAYS. I mean she didn’t even get a second costume change when I cant even count how many times she changed costumes and wigs. Plus, Lady Gaga’s appearance was the selling point for the video – that’s why i wanted to watch it. So it really didn’t feel like a collabo. I hate it when people do that.

Oh and the end part when she is moaning/huffing/puffing – wow. I kinda felt dirty after that.

I just want Beyonce gone. Personally, I feel that she’s a horrible solo artist. None of her songs appeal to me (and I like a lot of songs), her videos are lame (Single Ladies, best video, really?!?!?), everything about her just tires me. She is like an abyss of creativity, second to none other than Britney Spears.

She’s trying too hard with her Sasha Fierce persona…and it’s not working. The fact that she even came up with an “alter ego” is despicable…her own name does not warrant enough??? Does she need that name to make her look better? Why can’t she just be herself – and therein lies the problem, why CAN’T she be herself? You know, the girl who claims she loves God and goes to church. Because honestly, she is putting on a show (a really bad one at that) and it has crossed a line.

And you really don’t need to cross lines to make a statement.

Thanks for providing an outlet for my Beyonce rant

^^^ What I didn’t say above (and I meant to): I’m pretty sure that Beyonce is not like the character she portrays in Video Phone. I recognize that it is just a character…but that same character is in all her videos, etc. Now, young girls (and guys for that matter) are exposed to this ‘persona’ and because she is Beyonce, they want to be like her, even if what they see of her is not actually HER. Girls (and guys) are going to learn that they have to put on an act to be popular and ‘sexy’ and whatever else it is that kids want to be these days.

Beyonce has all the makings to be a good role model, but she’s not being one. And at the end of the day, that is what is really sad

You know, I was disturbed by the hyper-sexual images and arbitrary gunplay when I first saw Video Phone but I didn’t even make the connection between Guantanamo/Abu Ghraib until now. So now it’s even more disturbing and it definitely strikes me as irresponsible.

It’s also disturbing to me that this—wearing as few clothes as possible, reveling in being treated as a sexual object—-is being touted as female empowerment. There are better ways to show you’re empowered and you own your sexuality than to prance around half-naked and not demand to be seen as something more than an object to be coveted.

and it’s not just her; it’s EVERYONE. i don’t even listen to current music. it’s (mostly) all so…shallow. and the children are going to get to it, regardless of parents and curfew and ass whoopings. this crap is everywhere.
but…we appreciate you bringing to light (as if it weren’t painfully obvious already) that this is some tricky shit (emphasis on trick) and beyonce, who is purported to be a role model for us all, needs to watch her ass. i got the impression she and DC were trying to be the upstanding black singers, and instead, Michelle the Christian was dancing around in booty shorts and tiny tops. it’s just indicative of the entire failure of our culture to stand for anything that can actually develop and promote intellect or social uprightness (not a word).

I completely concur. it reminds me of the scenes in Mean Girls when you see Regina’s little sister dancing in front of the TV, imitating “Milkshake” and taking her shirt off for “Girls Gone Wild”.

Even though I’m not going to have kids at this stage in my life, I’m already wondering how I’ll deal with my kids being exposed to these kinds of things. I’m all for sexual liberation and freedom, but hopefully only with a context of understanding its effects on one’s self-esteem, etc.

It’s terrible that these entertainers, talented or not, so often give into the pressure of looking “badass”. It’s also sad to see strong women make themselves– and men, as well– into these images of sexual objectification.

I like Beyonce. I HATE this video. I didn’t catch the Guantanamo Bay reference. I figured it was an S&M/Bondage thing. Don’t ask me how I know about that. I think Sasha Fierce needs to go SAT DOWN somewhere. I mean did she really jiggle her titties? I never say titties, but what else do you call them when someone does that?

I didn’t get the gun thing either until someone told me that they were “shooting” a video. So LAME!!!!!! And where were the phones? She could have just called it camera or something.

I agree that Bey needs pants and GaGa needs to beat her face with crazy like she normally does. I mean did she really go subdued next to Beyonce? Really? Whose idea was that? Better yet, why didn’t anyone in her camp go “Ummm…Ms.Lady GaGa, do you really want to be in a video with someone whose face is like, ummm…perfect, when yours is like, ummm…unique?

    I’m just saying.

Dead at the fuzzed out Spice channel. They had that in Cali too? Comcast ain’t shit. Now I think that is was fuzzed out on purpose. I can hear the execs saying,”Let’s fuzz out the porn channel so that the kids can still see it, but we won’t get blamed for exposing them to smut.” Second exec, “Yeah, let’s get them all hyper-sexual and shit so that 12 years from now we can sell them Video Phones.”

Had a think about this video again last night, and I was wondering whether Beyonce is really to blame for this, or the society that she lives in that has let her get away with all this nonsense? From the days of ‘baby boy’ she has performed in little dresses and skirts that showed us her underwear, and she got away with that. Now that she is showing us her underwear without the skirt should we be so appalled by this? The more that she is undressed the more money she makes (an estimated 80 million a year)and the more accolades she gets – she has been nominated for 10 grammy awards (I know that there is lots of politics behind award shows etc but I’m just saying 10 NOMINATIONS). She is LEADING the pack. So maybe she is a product of what society wants, because if the society as whole was truly appalled by this video it would not have shown 10 times today (me watching mtv from 10am this morning to till now 4pm).

@mango (and whomever else was wondering) – I think the population as a whole is partially to blame for creating this monster. The other part comes from her management. It’s my understanding that label execs tell artists what they need to do to be appealing to the population based on how that population spends their money.

The pervasiveness f the internets (and other media, I’m sure) has us used to getting information quickly. Very, very quickly. Because of this, we get bored of things just as quickly. I’m not surprised that artists feel the need to keep pushing the envelope to keep reinventing themselves to stay interesting to the public. Why that envelope has to be the “assy-outie” envelope is a mystery to me. Hopefully we, as consumers, will get bored of this trend and focus more on people being actual artists and creatives.

I miss Missy Elliot. She was a creative. Old Kelis was a creative, too. Somehow, both of them managed to keep it fresh and interesting without resorting to having their asses out on stage and that’s how I like it.

@sui – I know there has to be another way to feel empowered. Dominatricies are not the only ones, I’m sure.

@ Everyone else – I sincerely thank you for your comments and thoughts on this. I have THE BEST readers in the universe. Word.

@Alicia I will be honest. When it comes to Beyonce, I do not think that her management has anything to do with her nakedness. After all. She is BEYONCE. Maybe if we were talking about the small fry like Keri Hilson and every other person in that ‘wannabe / still on the come up’ bracket, I would agree.

In my opinion Beyonce would like us to believe that decisions like that are made by her management and her people in order to choose what she then takes responsibility for. When the public LOVES something that she does (eg single ladies) – guess what? Beyonce is all over how it was HER vision, HER idea blah blah blah (and will not make us forget that she had something to do with the writing of the song – even though we all know who was truly behind that song), and then she will throw a bit of credit to her producer, choreographer and maybe her video director. But most of the credit goes to her. Now when it comes to other videos (even videophone) that people don’t receive to well, she is mum about it. Have you heard her speak on the video since it came out? Nope. Because she is waiting to see the reaction. Then she’ll decide on whether to talk about the video, or hey, move on to the fact that she is releasing another album in 2010. Now THAT 2010 project she has been vocal about in Europe, including confirming it on MTV UK. But she hasn’t said sh*t about the videophone video. Power play at its best. You should read the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. It has Beyonce’s name written all over it. You’ll see how she operates. I doubt that she has read the book, I just think that she is very industry clever. She surrounds herself with the greatest – because she is said to be nice and has an unassuming character – people easily divulge information to her, then she swagger jacks them, and keeps it moving. Power.

Even when you look at who she surrounds herself with (her family – her PA (her cousin), her tour manager (her cousin), her stylist (her mother) etc), and what roles they play. She is always the damsel in distress. Her father is her shield and is ‘the bastard’ of the family. Why? Because he carries out all her bitchy decisions and makes it seem like they were his ideas. So the world will easily hate him and feel sorry for Beyonce. If her father was THAT bad he would have been fired ages ago – Michael and Janet Jackson did it (because their father to them was a genuine ass and not good for business). So she surrounds herself with people who will easily take the blame – and don’t mind doing it because they go laughing all the way to the bank…

You are right about missing people like ‘old’ Kelis and Missy. I miss Missy’s videos – from ‘get your freak on’ to ‘she’s a …’… That also makes me miss the old Hype Williams who was all about creativity and not nakedness. Maybe its also the shortage of artists who are willing to take the risk and be about creativity instead of easy and fast money through gyrating and all sorts.

But I do believe that this nakedness is opening up a gap for new and true talent to come out because the demand is there, we just need people brave enough to supply.
